InspireIP recently completed its SOC 2® examination.
What that means for your IP?

Recognized for founder-led, multidisciplinary innovation across engineering, design, defense, aerospace, transportation, and entertainment.
Bran Ferren’s career has never fit one category. He is an Oscar-nominated visual effects designer and prolific inventor who co-founded Applied Minds to bring creative engineering to solve some of the hardest technical problems across industries.
World IP Day Recognition Series · 2026
On World IP Day 2026, InspireIP recognizes Bran Ferren, co-founder and CEO of Applied Minds, for a rare inventor career built across technology, design, storytelling, and systems engineering.
The recognition is based on Applied Minds’ patent activity and Bran’s own inventor footprint. The last five years of filings reflect the range of that work. They cover vehicle systems, optical and sensor technologies, networks, command-and-control systems, and advanced engineering work for defense, aerospace, automotive, and commercial clients.
Bran’s path into invention was never narrow. He began in visual effects, before moving into Disney Imagineering, where he led research and creative technology work across entertainment, media, and emerging systems.
In 2000, he co-founded Applied Minds with computer scientist Danny Hillis and Doug Carlston to apply that same multi-disciplinary thinking to government and commercial clients. In 2026, he was named in the inaugural Forbes 250: America’s Greatest Innovators list.
Bran founds Associates & Ferren and builds it into a respected design and special effects firm for film, theater, and entertainment. After Disney acquires the company, he joins Disney Imagineering and later leads research and development for The Walt Disney Company.
Bran co-founds Applied Minds with Danny Hillis in California. The company builds a wide patent portfolio across defense, aerospace, transportation, simulation, product design, command systems, and advanced prototyping.
Applied Minds files 18 patents across four years. The portfolio continues expanding across transport, optics, networks, command-and-control, and defense-oriented systems.
The company adds 12 more filings, with 9 filings in 2024. Bran is also named to the Forbes 250: America’s Greatest Innovators list.
Applied Minds is classified by the USPTO as a Small Entity.
Yet its five-year filing volume represents only a small slice of a much larger portfolio built over more than two decades. The company’s activity is concentrated in transport, semiconductors and optics, and networks and cryptography art units.
Founder, InspireIP · Inventor · Innovation Leader
Founded in 2000 and headquartered in Burbank, California, Applied Minds is a multidisciplinary design and technology company.
The company combines engineering, creative design, prototyping, software, systems thinking, and storytelling to solve complex problems for government and commercial clients.
Applied Minds has worked on projects involving vehicle vision systems, custom software, visualization platforms, modeling and simulation, specialized facilities, and command centers.
The company has worked with clients including Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, General Motors, Sony, Herman Miller, Intel, the Air Force Research Lab, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Library of Congress.
Each year we recognize the inventors and IP leaders behind the portfolios that protect what their companies create. That includes founder-inventors whose contributions often go unmarked. Nominate someone for next year’s list.
