What that means for your IP?

Recognized for co-founding and leading the technology behind Electric Hydrogen’s industrial-scale electrolyzer platform. His work helped move green hydrogen from lab-scale promise to gigawatt-scale manufacturing for refineries, eFuels, and ammonia projects worldwide.
World IP Day Recognition Series · 2026
On World IP Day 2026, InspireIP recognizes David Eaglesham, co-founder and CTO of Electric Hydrogen, for his inventor footprint and technical leadership at the company.
The recognition is based on Electric Hydrogen’s patent activity and public patent records where David is named as an inventor. His filings cover electrolyzer system architectures, porous transport layers for electrolytic cells, and multi-state power input systems that allow electrolyzers to run on intermittent renewable energy.
At Electric Hydrogen, that work supports a larger goal: building electrolyzer systems designed for gigawatt-scale green hydrogen production. The patent activity reflects the engineering behind a platform now being manufactured in the U.S. and selected for hydrogen projects across refineries.
David Eaglesham joins Breakthrough Energy Ventures as an Entrepreneur in Residence to study the economics of hydrogen production. In January 2021, he co-founds Electric Hydrogen with Raffi Garabedian, Dorian West, and Derek Warnick. The company files its first 2 patents that year, with David named as inventor.
The portfolio grows to 15 filings across two years as Electric Hydrogen announces its 1.2 GW electrolyzer factory in Devens, Massachusetts, closes a $380M Series C, and begins shipping its first 100 MW electrolyzer plant.
A sharp acceleration. 27 patents across two years, peaking at 18 filings in 2024. Electric Hydrogen's HYPRPlant receives third-party validation from DNV, and the company is selected by HIF Global for its Texas eFuels project and by Synergen Green Energy for a 240 MW green ammonia project.
Electric Hydrogen is classified by the USPTO as a Small Entity, yet its filing volume sits well above what is typical for clean energy startups of its age and size. Much of that activity is concentrated in the chemical and materials art units that protect electrolyzer cell designs, membrane systems, and hydrogen production methods.
Founder, InspireIP · Inventor · Innovation Leader
Founded in 2020 and headquartered in Devens, Massachusetts, Electric Hydrogen builds industrial-scale electrolyzer systems for green hydrogen production.
The company’s HYPRPlant is a fully integrated, pre-engineered electrolyzer plant designed to deliver up to 60% lower total installed costs compared with conventional systems.
Electric Hydrogen operates a 1.2 GW annual capacity factory in Devens and has been selected for projects across refineries, eFuels, green ammonia, and heavy industry.
The company’s investors include Fortescue, Amazon, bp, Microsoft, United Airlines, Temasek, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Rio Tinto. It was also reported as the first green hydrogen startup to reach a $1 billion valuation.
Each year we recognize the inventors and IP leaders behind the portfolios that protect what their companies create. That includes founder-inventors whose contributions often go unmarked. Nominate someone for next year’s list.
