The Recognition

Solving the final 100 feet of package delivery

On World IP Day 2026, InspireIP recognizes Ned Hill, founder and CEO of Position Imaging, for building a highly active patent program in precision tracking and logistics technology.

The recognition is based on Position Imaging’s patent activity. Ned is named across patents and applications covering radio tracking, computer vision, machine learning, and AI-based position detection systems.

He founded Position Imaging in 2006 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The company initially developed precision tracking technologies for fields such as image-guided surgery, gaming, and AR/VR before moving into logistics.

Position Imaging later launched Smart Package Room for multifamily market in 2017. The system uses proprietary computer vision and AI to automate package delivery and retrieval, holding 3x more packages than lockers in the same footprint and processing pickups in under 20 seconds. The company has since expanded into retail with iPickup, a self-service e-commerce fulfillment platform for online order pickup and returns.

Patent Footprint

A portfolio shaped around knowing exactly where every package is

2006–2016

Ned Hill founds Position Imaging in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, opening the company's research lab to develop precision tracking technologies. The initial focus spans image-guided surgery, gaming, and immersive AR/VR applications. The company builds its foundational IP in radio tracking and position detection systems.

2017–2020

Position Imaging launches the Smart Package Room, its first commercial product, for the multifamily market. The system uses computer vision and AI to automate package delivery and retrieval. The company begins building strategic partnerships with major residential and retail industry players, and Ned is recognized as a Technology Innovator by the CES Consumer Technology Association.

2021–2023

26 patents across three years. The company expands into retail with iPickup, a self-service e-commerce fulfillment platform for BOPIS and returns. Their portfolio grows across computer vision, AI-based tracking, and logistics automation. Ned is named Technology Innovator of the Year by the Multifamily Innovation Council.

2024–2025

17 more filings, peaking at 14 in 2024. Position Imaging launches the iPickup Point system for self-serve package pickup and drop-off in retail locations. It also secures RealPage Certified AppPartner status for its Smart Package Room, and raises total funding to over $75 million.

Precision Tracking & Logistics Technology

A small-entity company filing like a much larger one

Position Imaging is classified by the USPTO as a Small Entity, yet its five-year filing volume of 51 patents sits well above what is typical for logistics technology companies of its size.

Much of that activity is concentrated in the transport, e-commerce, and communications art units that protect position detection systems, computer vision methods, and package tracking and fulfillment architectures.

"Leading an innovation program is harder than inventing on your own. It means choosing what to file, who to credit, and where to invest, over and over, for years. The leaders we recognize on World IP Day have done that consistently, and built something that compounds."
